Background

The vessel was a 2009 Beneteau Oceanis 40, registered in Bodrum, listed at €72,000. The listing described the boat as "recently serviced, ready to sail, ideal for extended cruising." No survey history was available. The seller stated the boat had been "well maintained" in private ownership for three years after a period of charter use.

The buyer, a Dutch national looking for a liveaboard based in Bodrum, commissioned a pre-purchase survey before making an offer. The asking price was already at the lower end of comparable Oceanis 40 listings, which made the buyer more motivated to proceed quickly.

Why This Matters A boat priced at the lower end of the market is not necessarily a deal. It is sometimes a sign that a previous survey or survey attempt revealed problems the seller couldn't address. In this case, we later established that a British buyer had commissioned a viewing 8 months earlier and not proceeded, the seller had no explanation.

Survey Approach

The vessel was surveyed on the hard at Bodrum Marina after a standard haul-out arranged by the buyer. A full hull moisture survey was conducted using a calibrated capacitance moisture meter at a 200mm grid across all below-waterline sections, plus the hull sides up to 600mm above the waterline.

Moisture Readings

Healthy GRP hull: 8-14% WME. Concern threshold: 18-22%. Readings above 25% indicate active osmosis requiring treatment.

Visual Findings

Below the waterline, blistering was extensive across the bow sections, visible immediately after the anti-fouling paint was washed off during haul-out. Individual blisters ranged from 8mm to 35mm diameter. Cross-section of two blisters revealed the characteristic osmotic fluid, acidic, amber-coloured, with a vinegar smell, confirming active osmosis rather than surface contamination.

The bow sections showed evidence of a previous barrier coat application, partially stripped in places, suggesting an earlier treatment attempt that had failed or not been completed. This is significant: the seller had not disclosed any prior treatment.

⚠️ Undisclosed Prior Treatment, The evidence of a previous barrier coat that was not disclosed by the seller was noted in the survey report as a material non-disclosure. This strengthened the buyer's negotiation position significantly.

Repair Estimate

Three independent quotes were obtained from Bodrum marina yards before the buyer entered negotiation:

ScopeEstimate (EUR)
Haul-out and pressure wash€350
Abrasive blasting to bare GRP (full hull below WL)€2,800
Drying period (minimum 90 days on hard)€1,200 (hard standing)
Osmotic blistering repair and fairing (bow sections)€6,500-8,500
5-coat epoxy barrier system (Interprotect or equivalent)€3,200
Antifouling and launch€800
Total estimate€14,850-16,850
Plus: 90 days out of water (lost sailing season, contingency)€4,000-6,000
Full economic cost€18,850-22,850

Negotiation Outcome

Day 1, Survey report delivered

Full report sent to buyer with all moisture readings, visual findings, and repair quotes attached. Report classified osmosis findings as Priority A (significant structural and financial impact).

Day 3, Buyer submits written renegotiation request

Buyer presented seller with report, three independent repair quotes, and a written request: either (a) reduce asking price by €20,000, or (b) complete full osmosis repair at seller's expense before transfer. Seller was also informed of the undisclosed prior treatment evidence.

Day 5, Seller responds

Seller acknowledged the undisclosed prior treatment. Counter-offered €12,000 reduction. Buyer declined.

Day 7, Agreement reached

Final agreed price reduction: €18,000 (from €72,000 to €54,000). Transfer completed at Bodrum Harbour Master's office. Buyer budgeted €16,000 for repair, total effective purchase price: €70,000 for a vessel in surveyed condition. Equivalent Oceanis 40 with no osmosis: €74,000-82,000.
