Building New
How long does it take to build a wooden gulet?
18–24 months for a typical 18–20m gulet from keel-laying to sea trial. Larger bespoke builds run 24–36 months. Any yard quoting significantly less will either sacrifice quality or miss the schedule.
What does a new build wooden yacht cost in Turkey in 2026?
A 14m gulet starts at approximately €320,000–€420,000 in standard specification. An 18m deluxe gulet runs €700,000–€950,000. A 22m bespoke gulet with teak: €1.4M–€2.0M. Use our Build Cost Estimator for a detailed breakdown.
Why is Turkey cheaper than the Netherlands or Italy?
40–55% lower for equivalent quality. Labour costs, overhead, and material sourcing are significantly lower. The craftsmanship knowledge for gulet construction is deeper in Bodrum and Marmaris than anywhere else in the world.
Can I commission a yacht if I am not based in Turkey?
Yes — this is exactly the situation Surveyyat is designed for. Most clients are based in Northern Europe or the US. We are the eyes on the ground. You make decisions based on our weekly reports and attend for key milestones if you wish.
What timber should I specify?
Hull planking: iroko is the standard — durable, rot-resistant, well understood by Turkish yards. Teak adds 25–40% to material cost. Decks: teak is the premium choice. Interior: mahogany or sapele. Mast: Douglas fir. See our Timber Guide for full detail.
What is cold-moulded construction?
Cold-moulded uses thin wood veneers laminated with epoxy — a stiff, strong monocoque shell that does not need caulking and has lower long-term maintenance. It costs 15–25% more to build but eliminates caulking maintenance entirely.
Buying Second-Hand
Do I always need a pre-purchase survey?
Yes. Always. Without exception. A wooden vessel can look perfect and have serious moisture ingress, frame rot, or corroded fastenings invisible to the eye. The survey fee (€950–€2,400) is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
Can I use the survey to negotiate the price?
Yes — this is one of the survey's primary practical uses. Survey findings become the basis for price negotiation. A documented €15,000 repair bill gives you well-evidenced grounds for a price reduction.
What are the red flags in a second-hand wooden yacht?
High moisture readings in hull planking; soft or punky frames; corroded or missing keel bolts; inaccessible seacocks; DIY electrical work; and any seller who is reluctant to allow an independent survey.
Should I buy new or second-hand?
New build gives you exactly what you want and full provenance from day one — but takes 18–36 months and requires active supervision. Second-hand is faster and often better value if the vessel is well-maintained. Our AI Advisor can help you think through this for your specific situation.
What paperwork should a second-hand vessel have?
Original construction documentation; Turkish tonnage certificate if Turkish-flagged; all survey reports; engine service history; maintenance logs; registration documents; and any charter licence.
Build Supervision
Do I need supervision if the yard has a good reputation?
Yes — and the yard's reputation is not the point. Even excellent yards have production pressures and staff variations. No matter how reputable, a yard's quality control exists to protect the yard, not the buyer.
How often does Surveyyat visit the yard?
Typically once per week during active construction, more frequently at critical stages (keel-laying, planking closure, systems before joinery). You receive a written report every Friday.
What is included in the weekly report?
40–80 annotated photographs from the visit; progress status against the timeline; any deviations from specification; materials verified; and our recommendations where action is required.
What languages do you work in?
English primarily, with full Turkish fluency for yard communication. All reports are written in English.
Costs & Fees
How much does build supervision cost?
2–4% of the total build contract, agreed as a fixed project fee. For a €700,000 build: €14,000–€28,000 for complete coverage across 18–24 months. No hourly rates, no additional charges for extra visits.
How much does a pre-purchase survey cost?
€950 for vessels up to 14m; €1,200–€1,800 for 14–22m; €1,800–€2,400 for 22m+. Travel within the Bodrum–Göcek–Marmaris corridor is included.
Are there hidden costs?
No. We quote a fixed fee for every engagement before we begin. The only exception is travel outside our standard geographic coverage, quoted separately and transparently.
About Surveyyat
What makes Surveyyat different from a broker or agent?
A broker represents the seller. An agent represents the yard. We represent you — and only you. We take no commission from yards, sellers, or anyone else. Our only income is the fee paid by the client.
Are you ABYC Professional Member?
Yes. Surveyyat is an ABYC Professional Member — the internationally recognised certification for marine surveyors, referenced by the US Coast Guard and accepted by major flag states and insurers.
How long have you been in Bodrum?
15+ years of continuous presence in Bodrum, with ongoing relationships in yards across the Bodrum–Marmaris–Göcek triangle. We are not visiting surveyors — we are a permanent local authority.
