Didim holds one of the largest hardstandings on the coast and a high proportion of foreign owners who visit for a few weeks a year. A boat that has waited eleven months carries a different list from one that has been sailed hard.
Around Didim and Altınkum the recurring items follow long idle periods: degraded fuel, sulphated batteries, dried shaft glands, anodes consumed while nothing happened, and bilges that tell you how long the boat has stood.
1. Surveying in Didim: Local Conditions
| Marinas and berthing | D-Marin Didim, Altınkum, Güllük Marina nearby |
|---|---|
| Wind and sea | Facing the open Aegean, the summer meltemi is felt directly; northerly systems dominate in winter and the approach can be exposed. |
| Fleet profile | Predominantly long-term berthing and wintering, with a high proportion of foreign ownership and low annual hours. |
| What comes forward in survey | Fuel degradation and microbial contamination, battery health, bilge condition, anode consumption and the state of systems that have not been run. |
| Lifting and planning | Wide hardstanding capacity, so the week ashore that a moisture survey needs is easy to arrange, one of the best regions in the country for that. |
| Customs | Not a customs port; entry and exit formalities are handled at Kuşadası or Bodrum. |
2. What Long Idle Periods Do
A boat that is used for three weeks a year is not a lightly used boat, she is a stationary one, and standing still has its own failure modes. Diesel degrades and collects water; microbial growth starts at the fuel-water interface and ends at the injectors. Batteries that sit partially discharged sulphate and never return their capacity. Traditional shaft packings dry, harden and then weep when she finally moves. Anodes are consumed whether or not anybody is aboard.
None of this shows in a walk-through. It shows in a fuel sample, a battery capacity test, a look at the bilge and the state of the anodes. Around Didim those four are the questions worth paying for, and they are cheap questions relative to what the answers save.
The advantage of the region runs the other way too: hardstanding capacity is wide, so arranging the week ashore that a moisture survey needs is straightforward here in a way it is not everywhere.
3. What the Survey Covers
| Area | Method and instruments |
|---|---|
| Hull and structure | Moisture readings on a grid (Tramex), sounding with a phenolic hammer, keel attachment, rudder and shaft line |
| Deck and fittings | Core condition around hardware, chainplate bedding, hatches and portlights, teak thickness where fitted |
| Rig | Tension measured with a Loos gauge, terminals and swages under magnification, mast step and spreaders |
| Machinery | Cold start, temperatures and vibration under staged load, leakage traces, belts and circuits, service record consistency |
| Electrical | True RMS measurement, cable sizing and protection, bonding continuity, stray current, battery condition |
| Plumbing and safety | Seacocks and hoses, bilge pumps and alarm, gas installation, fire equipment and service dates |
| Documents | Registration, hull number agreement, CE/RCD, transit log history on foreign-flagged boats |
4. What You Receive
- A report of 70+ pages with photographs, delivered in 2-3 working days, in English or Turkish
- Findings in A-B-C priority classes, safety first, then this season, then planned maintenance
- Measurement values with the conditions under which they were taken, and any limitations stated plainly
- A negotiating position you can put in front of a seller, item by item
- The report archived for 24 months; it belongs to whoever commissioned it and goes to nobody else
