Surveying in Çanakkale: berths, haul-out and local points
Boats in Çanakkale mostly lie at the town marina and at the harbours of Gelibolu, Bozcaada and Gökçeada. Haul-out capacity for larger boats is limited in the area, so the first planning question for a pre-purchase survey is where the boat will be lifted.
Haul-out
| Facility | Haul-out | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Çanakkale Marina (town) | Mainly berthing; haul-out confirmed before the appointment | Survey afloat and sea trial possible here |
| Setur Ayvalık Marina (79 NM south) | 110-tonne travel lift; lift dock 7.20 m | Nearest large facility for hauling bigger boats |
| Bozcaada, Gökçeada, Gelibolu | Berthing harbours | Survey starts afloat; if a haul-out is needed the boat is moved |
The haul-out site is chosen together before the appointment, based on the boat's weight, beam and draught, which are sent to the facility in writing. All marinas are in the marina and boatyard directory.
What we look at closely here
Current and shipping. The surface current in the Dardanelles mostly runs from the Sea of Marmara towards the Aegean, and commercial traffic is heavy. On boats kept afloat we look for wash damage: fender and topside chafe, worn lines and strain around the cleats and their deck fittings.
North-easterly wind. The prevailing wind is from the north-east. On a boat that has been berthed for a long time we check the bow fittings, chain locker and windlass closely.
Delivery planning. Through the strait the current helps southbound and works against you northbound. If a delivery follows the purchase, the engine, cooling and fuel systems are assessed with that passage in mind.
Planning
For moisture readings the boat must be ashore and drying for at least one week; we book the haul-out with the facility. The travel charge is €90, shown as a separate line in the quote; select "Çanakkale / Gelibolu" in the survey calculator for an estimate.

Harbours that take yachts
| Harbour | Depth | Berthing and facilities | For yachts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kuzu Limanı (Gökçeada) | Sheltered from all weather; under the harbour master and used by the ferries. Fuel by tanker. | A ferry harbour; ask the harbour master about depth and space for a yacht. | |
| Bozcaada yacht pontoon (Bozcaada) | at the quay 3 m | Berthing on lazy lines; water, electricity, showers and toilets. Sheltered except from east and south-east winds; swell enters in strong northerlies. | Draught up to about 2.5 m. |
| Babakale harbour (Ayvacık) | 2-8 m | 115 boats; no lazy lines, anchor. Sheltered from all weather and especially good in south-westerlies; strong gusts come down in easterlies. | Depth varies from 2 to 8 m; boats drawing over 2 m berth in the deep part. |
| Küçükkuyu harbour (Ayvacık) | 2-4 m | 85 boats; anchor except on private lazy lines. Water and electricity; engine mechanics and machine shops nearby. | Draught 1.5-3.5 m; confirm a berth ahead for draughts over 2 m. |
Only harbours that take yachts are listed; places suited only to small boats are left out. The draught limit allows about half a metre under the keel at the shallowest berth; a length limit is given where the source states one. Space varies by season, so call the harbour operator before arriving, especially in summer. The afloat parts of a survey can be done in these harbours; the underwater hull needs a separate haul-out.
Getting to know Çanakkale better
Boats in the area
Çanakkale is the gateway between the Marmara and the Aegean. Besides local leisure and fishing-style motor boats, there are boats moving between İstanbul and the Aegean or coming down from the Black Sea. Many boats bought in Çanakkale therefore set off on a long delivery soon after.
Boats used in the strait
Current and shipping mean engines and gearboxes of boats used in the Dardanelles work under more load. We take engine readings at working temperature and check vibration and gearbox behaviour on the sea trial. On berthed boats we look for topside and fender marks left by wash.
Islands: Bozcaada and Gökçeada
On Bozcaada and Gökçeada boats are mostly kept in harbour and haul-out options are limited. The survey starts afloat with deck, interior, systems and sea trial. For the underwater hull the boat is moved to a facility that can lift it, or a diver inspection is coordinated.
Common routes
From Çanakkale boats mostly go to Gelibolu, Ayvalık, İstanbul and the islands. Northbound the current is against you, so fuel and timing are planned for it; southbound it helps. The skipper makes the departure call on weather and current.
Practical notes for buyers
A boat bought in Çanakkale is often moved on straight away. Planning the survey and delivery preparation together saves time: findings that must be fixed before the delivery are pulled into a separate list, and the boat does not set off on a long leg until that list is done.
Service, parts and logistics
Trades and service
Yacht-specific service is limited in Çanakkale. Haul-outs and major repairs are usually planned at Ayvalık or at Marmara facilities. General jobs such as machining, welding, hydraulic hoses and upholstery can be done in the city's industrial area.
Parts, materials and accessories
Parts and chandlery come by courier from İstanbul or İzmir; on the islands delivery depends on ferry schedules.
Travel and logistics
Çanakkale Airport is close to the town, and the Çanakkale Bridge has shortened the road link to İstanbul. General service is available around Çanakkale; specialist yacht parts come quickly from İstanbul. Haul-out is planned at the regional marinas.
Repair planning
If you want a recommendation for repairing a finding, we can suggest trades; the work is invoiced directly to you, and we never sell repairs on a boat we surveyed. If a repair depends on parts, the lead time is added to the haul-out and delivery schedule.

Yes. The parts possible afloat are done on the island; for the underwater hull a haul-out plan or diver inspection is agreed based on the boat's condition.
Northbound the Dardanelles current is against you, so the passage is planned around weather and current. Engine, cooling and fuel system readiness matter before the delivery, and the survey assesses them with that in mind.
