Yacht Survey & Delivery
Ayvalık, Turkey
Buying a boat at Setur Ayvalık Marina, in Cunda or on the Edremit Gulf? We plan the haul-out, drying time and sea trial as one schedule; our base in Dikili is 24 miles away by sea, so there is no travel charge.
The survey follows the same steps here: appointment, haul-out, moisture and sounding readings, a sea trial if needed, then a 70+ page photo report. Details: How the survey process works →
Surveying in Ayvalık: marina, haul-out and local points
Most boats in Ayvalık lie at Setur Ayvalık Marina in the town, and haul-outs are usually done there. For boats in Cunda, Dikili or Altınova the survey starts on site; if a haul-out is needed we choose the facility together.
Haul-out
| Facility | Haul-out | Capacity and depth | Survey note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setur Ayvalık Marina Town centre | 110 t travel lift; dock 7.20 m wide | 200 berths, about 30 ashore; up to 4.70 m in the marina, 6 m in the approach channel | Hardstanding is tight, so the drying week is booked in advance. |
| Alibey (Cunda) harbour | Slipway, boats up to 25 m | 15 lazy lines for visiting yachts; 2-3 m | Practical for wooden boats and boats already on the slip; depth is confirmed for draughts over 2 m. |
| Oasis Marina Yeni Foça, 40 miles south | 110 t travel lift; dock 8 m wide | 245 afloat, 100 ashore | The option for catamarans wider than about 7 m that do not fit the Ayvalık dock. |
Figures as of October 2026, from the facilities and public sources. The boat's weight, beam and draught are sent to the facility in writing before booking. All facilities are in the marina and boatyard directory.
What we look at closely here
Lazy-line wear. Berthing is on lazy lines. We look for chafe from the lines around the propeller, shaft and rudder, and for strain at the bow cleats and their deck fittings.
Beam and draught. The lift dock is 7.20 m wide, so for a wide catamaran we decide at the quote stage whether it is hauled in Ayvalık or at Yeni Foça. For a deep-keeled boat the sea-trial route is drawn around the depth of the approach channel.
Boats standing on the slip. On boats that have stood on a slipway in Cunda or along the coast for a long time we check for hull distortion at the support points and, on wooden boats, dried-out caulking and plank seams.
Paperwork. With Lesbos close by, foreign-flagged boats change hands here often. The transit log and flag papers are checked against the boat before the survey; see the transit log guide.
Planning
For moisture readings the boat must be ashore and drying for at least one week; we book the haul-out with the marina. There is no travel charge in Ayvalık; select "Ayvalık / Cunda" in the survey calculator for an estimate.

Harbours that take yachts
| Harbour | Depth | Berthing and facilities | For yachts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alibey (Cunda) harbour | 2-3 m | Usually full of local, commercial and fishing boats; 15 lazy lines for visiting yachts. A slipway yard hauls boats up to 25 m. For draughts over 2 m, depth is confirmed in advance. | Draught up to about 2 m; confirm ahead if deeper. |
Only harbours that take yachts are listed; places suited only to small boats are left out. The draught limit allows about half a metre under the keel at the shallowest berth; a length limit is given where the source states one. Space varies by season, so call the harbour operator before arriving, especially in summer. The afloat parts of a survey can be done in these harbours; the underwater hull needs a separate haul-out.
Getting to know Ayvalık better
Boats in the area
Ayvalık is within easy driving distance of İstanbul, Bursa and Balıkesir, so owners from these cities favour this North Aegean port. Sailing yachts and mid-size motor yachts dominate. For boats used in summer and laid up ashore in winter, the lay-up routine is an important part of the survey.
Sailing among the islands
The islands off Ayvalık and the waters around Cunda call for careful navigation, with shallows and rocks. On boats used here we inspect the keel-to-hull joint, keel bolts, rudder stock and propeller for signs of grounding. A crack or separation at the keel joint is reported as a grade A finding.
Season and lay-up
The North Aegean winter brings north-easterlies and rain. On a boat ashore we look for water ingress at deck fittings, window seals and the mast step with moisture readings. Boats listed in autumn are usually bought before lay-up, so the survey should be booked early in that season.
Common routes
From Ayvalık boats mostly go to Dikili, Foça, İzmir and Çanakkale. Lesbos lies across the water. For boats moving to İstanbul or south, the delivery is planned around North Aegean wind patterns.
Practical notes for buyers
For buyers visiting from İstanbul or Bursa, survey, haul-out and sea trial are grouped into the same week where possible. While the boat dries, deck, interior and systems are inspected; moisture readings come at the end of the drying period, so the buyer sees most of the report in a single visit.
Service, parts and logistics
Trades and service
Setur Ayvalık Marina's hardstanding has technical workshops for routine maintenance, paint and mechanical work.
Parts, materials and accessories
Specialist parts usually come by courier from İzmir or İstanbul.
Travel and logistics
Koca Seyit Airport at Edremit and İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport are used. Local workshops in Ayvalık cover general work; specialist yacht parts arrive from İzmir within a day, or from İstanbul if needed. Wintering and hardstanding use the Ayvalık-Cunda area.
Repair planning
If you want a recommendation for repairing a finding, we can suggest trades; the work is invoiced directly to you, and we never sell repairs on a boat we surveyed. If a repair depends on parts, the lead time is added to the haul-out and delivery schedule.

Surveying in Ayvalık
Haul-outs are mostly done at Setur Ayvalık Marina, which lists a 110-tonne travel lift and a 7.20 m wide lift dock.
No. Ayvalık is close to our base in Dikili, so there is no travel charge. For moisture readings the boat must dry ashore for at least one week; the report is delivered in 2-3 working days.
Yes. Ayvalık to İzmir is about 70 nautical miles and Ayvalık to Bodrum about 174. The skipper makes the departure call on weather; handover and arrival are recorded with photos.
It depends on how serious the grounding was. The keel joint, bolts, internal structure and rudder are inspected; any damage and repair scope are written into the report and can be used in negotiation.
Allowing for haul-out and drying time, autumn and spring are easiest. Summer is possible too, but haul-out slots should be booked early because the marina is busy.
The lift dock at Setur Ayvalık Marina is 7.20 m wide. A wider catamaran is hauled at Oasis Marina in Yeni Foça, 40 miles south, where the dock is 8 m; the afloat inspection and sea trial can still be done in Ayvalık.
Yes. A boat on lazy lines in Alibey (Cunda) harbour is inspected afloat in place. The harbour slipway hauls boats up to 25 m, so small and wooden boats can also be hauled there.
The transit log, flag certificate and the seller's authority are compared with the hull number and engine serial numbers before the survey. Any mismatch has to be resolved before purchase; see the transit log guide.
