You have a survey report and you are not sure about it. Are the findings serious or overstated; are the cost estimates realistic; is there something the report does not say? None of that needs the boat surveyed again, the report itself can be read.
A second opinion is an independent assessment of an existing report. It is done on the document alone, without attending the boat, which makes it both quick and inexpensive.
What We Look At
| Heading | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Scope adequacy | For this boat at this age, was what should have been examined examined; what was left out |
| Method | Which reading with which instrument; are the conditions stated (how long had she been ashore?) |
| Limitations | Are unreachable areas recorded, no limitations at all is itself a signal |
| Weight of findings | Is the classification consistent; is a cosmetic defect presented as structural, or the reverse |
| Cost estimates | Are the figures realistic for the region and the work |
| Open questions | What the report raises but does not answer, a list to put to the surveyor |
| Negotiating value | Which findings belong at the table and which are ordinary maintenance |
When It Helps
- The seller's surveyor wrote it, an independent reading balances the relationship
- The report is short or vague, ten pages is often a checklist rather than a report
- The findings alarmed you, some read as serious and are routine maintenance
- The findings seem too clean, a report with no limitations may be a report of what was not examined
- Before negotiating, knowing which item carries weight at the table
How It Works
- You send the report and, if available, the listing details.
- It is assessed under the seven headings above.
- You receive a written assessment and a list of questions for the surveyor or seller.
- If you wish, we go through the findings together on a call.
