Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about boat valuations and market estimates.

The calculator gives a directional figure based on current asking prices in the Turkish and Eastern Mediterranean used-boat market (sourced from YachtAll, boats.com and YachtWorld). For a well-maintained production yacht in average condition, the estimate typically lands within 10-15% of the eventual sale price. However, it cannot account for the boat's actual condition, fitted equipment, refit history, engine hours or negotiated discounts, all of which can move the value significantly. For any purpose beyond a rough guide, a ABYC Professional Member surveyor's valuation is the appropriate tool.
A formal valuation report is typically required for: insurance (most agreed-value policies require a surveyor's report), selling (a professional valuation strengthens your asking price and removes buyer doubt), bank or asset finance, legal proceedings such as divorce settlements or estate administration, and company asset registers. Some flag states also require a current valuation as part of a vessel registration or transfer of ownership. The instant estimate on this page is not accepted for any of these purposes.
A formal valuation combines a physical inspection of the vessel with a comparative market analysis. The surveyor examines the boat's structural condition, equipment inventory, engine hours and overall presentation, then cross-references these against recent comparable sales and active listings in the relevant market. The resulting report states an estimated market value, a forced-sale value and a replacement value, and it is signed and stamped by an ABYC Professional Member surveyor. The report is delivered in English and Turkish within two to three working days of the inspection.
Brand recognition directly influences buyer demand in the resale market. Boats from builders with strong global dealer networks, consistent build quality and an active class community, Beneteau, Hallberg-Rassy, Oyster, Lagoon, command a premium because buyers have confidence in parts availability, resale liquidity and peer knowledge. Less well-known or smaller-volume builders may produce excellent boats, but they trade at a discount simply because the buyer pool is narrower. The multipliers in the calculator reflect actual observed price differences in Mediterranean listings, not just general reputation.
Upgrades can improve value, but rarely dollar-for-dollar. Buyers expect a boat to be maintained to a reasonable standard, so many upgrades simply restore expected value rather than add premium. Items that genuinely add value include: new sails, a new or recently serviced engine, a recent full antifoul and osmosis treatment, modern electronics (chartplotter, AIS, autopilot) and a recent rigging replacement. Cosmetic upgrades (new upholstery, paint) have a smaller effect. A detailed equipment and refit list is worth including when selling, and a ABYC Professional Member surveyor will factor it into a valuation.
Catamarans command a significant premium over monohulls of the same length due to their greater interior volume, stability, shallower draught and popularity in the charter market. A 14-metre catamaran will typically be worth two to three times more than a 14-metre sailing monohull of the same age. Depreciation is also slower for well-known cat builders (Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard) because global demand, particularly from the charter and liveaboard markets, remains strong. The calculator uses a separate base rate for catamarans to reflect this structural price difference.
Yes, in two ways. First, a boat based in Turkey is typically priced 10-20% below an identical boat in northern Europe or the US because the buyer pool is smaller and logistics for exporting can be complex. Second, a boat's condition is often shaped by where it has been kept, a Mediterranean boat stored in warm, dry winters tends to show less osmosis and UV damage than one kept in northern Atlantic conditions. The calculator reflects Turkish and Eastern Mediterranean market pricing; if you are considering a boat in a different market, the actual values may differ.
Yes, this is in fact the most common scenario. A buyer's valuation (carried out as part of a pre-purchase survey) confirms whether the asking price is realistic and gives you a defensible counter-offer position if it is not. Many buyers find that the survey fee pays for itself within the first negotiation. We will inspect the boat, assess its condition and equipment, and provide a written market value estimate alongside the full condition report, all in 2-3 working days.
