When buying a boat most people look at the purchase price; the real decision lies in the costs that come back every year. This calculator works only with the figures you enter and shows the cost item by item.
1. Calculator
Enter all amounts in the same currency. The calculator uses only the values you enter; it assumes no prices.
2. Estimating the items properly
- Berthing: get a written price from the marina; summer and winter rates differ. More: berthing contract.
- Insurance: the rate depends on age, value, cruising area and survey status; get a quote from the insurer.
- Maintenance and repair: keep it higher for older and system-heavy boats. B-class findings in a survey report set the first years' maintenance budget directly.
- Fuel: engine hours and consumption depend on how you use the boat; start with a realistic estimate in the first year.
- Depreciation: not a cash cost but a real one. More: boat valuation.
3. Surprises that break the budget
The items that most often break the annual budget are unplanned: an engine overhaul, a new rig, osmosis treatment, a new teak deck or rewiring. Seeing when these might come before you buy is the main contribution of a pre-purchase survey. You can add the report's cost ranges to this calculator as maintenance and repair.
