Pre-Delivery
Inspection

A new boat does not arrive perfect.‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌

A new boat does not arrive perfect. Every boat leaving a factory has installation, adjustment and missing items, that is normal. What is not normal is finding them after the warranty clock has started.

A pre-delivery inspection is an independent examination before you accept the boat. Its purpose is not to find fault but to put the shortfalls on record while they are still a condition of handover.

Timing is everything: a defect found after handover becomes a warranty claim, chasing, correspondence, waiting. The same defect found before handover is a condition of delivery, and can be tied to the balance payment.

The Output: a Numbered Snag List

You receive a photographed, numbered snag list. For each item: what was found, where, which specification clause it relates to, and whether it should be rectified before handover or under warranty.‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌

That list is the agenda for the handover meeting with the yard. A handover meeting without one runs on memory, and memory works differently for each side.‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌

When It Applies

The balance payment: tying the pre-handover list to the balance is the most effective arrangement in practice. Chasing shortfalls after payment is far harder than before it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almost always, and that is not a quality failing, it is the nature of series production. The problem is not that defects exist but that they are found after the warranty clock starts.
A dealer's inspection signs off its own delivery. An independent examination does not replace it; the two are meaningful together, and it protects the dealer too by preventing later disputes.
A full day including sea trial, depending on length and the number of systems. Longer on catamarans and system-heavy boats.
The list is a record, not a demand: what was found, where, and which clause it relates to. Rejected items stay on record and support any later warranty claim.
It can, but it loses its force. What was a condition of delivery becomes a warranty claim.
