Distances are marina to marina along the shortest safe sea route around land and shoals. On a real passage weather, choice of shelter and traffic can add around 5 percent. Times are hours under way only; days and cost at 8 hours a day are shown in the delivery cost calculator.
2. Entering and leaving the Ayvalık bay
The bay is entered through a narrow, shallow buoyed channel. Boats stay inside the marked channel and night entries are not planned. The passages between Cunda (Alibey Island) and the mainland are not suitable for larger boats.
Heading south, the route passes Dikili and Foça and rounds Karaburun to Çeşme and the Chios Strait. Heading north towards Çanakkale, Cape Babakale is where the northerly is felt most.
3. South from Ayvalık: Bodrum, Marmaris, Göcek
Ayvalık to Bodrum is about 174 nautical miles and Ayvalık to Göcek about 268. These routes are usually planned with stops at Dikili or Foça, then Çeşme, Kuşadası or Didim; in summer the northerly is behind you heading south but builds the sea.
4. North from Ayvalık: Çanakkale and Istanbul
Ayvalık to Çanakkale is about 77 nautical miles and Ayvalık to Istanbul (Ataköy) about 204. The Dardanelles are transited in daylight, allowing for current and ship traffic. The Babakale headland is where the northerly is felt hardest on this leg.
5. Stops and refuelling
The first fuel stop is the fuel station at Setur Ayvalık Marina. Heading south, Dikili (24 miles) and Oasis Marina in Yeni Foça (about 40 miles, with fuel and a 110 t travel lift) are reachable within the day; Çeşme and Teos are the second day’s leg. Heading north, Küçükkuyu and Çanakkale are used as stops.
6. Wide and deep boats
Depth in the marina is up to 4.70 m and 6 m in the approach channel. For a deep-keeled boat, departure and arrival through the channel are timed for daylight. The lift dock is 7.20 m wide; if a wide catamaran must be hauled before the delivery, this is planned in the 8 m dock at Yeni Foça.
7. Foreign-flagged boats
With Lesbos across the water, foreign-flagged boats are common in Ayvalık. Before a delivery along the Turkish coast we check that the transit log is valid and in the new owner’s name. If clearing in or out is needed, the port is added to the passage plan. Our deliveries run along the Turkish coast between Istanbul and Fethiye; we do not deliver abroad. Details: transit log guide.
8. If you have bought a boat in Ayvalık
Planning the pre-purchase survey and the delivery together puts the condition of the boat on record before the passage. Survey: yacht survey Ayvalık; nearby: yacht survey Dikili.
9. Before departure
- Papers: registration, insurance confirmed to cover the delivery, and the skipper's licence where required.
- Readiness for sea: engine oil and cooling, fuel filters and spares, bilge pumps, navigation lights, VHF and safety gear.
- The day before departure the forecast and the shelters on the route are reviewed one last time; the go/no-go decision is the skipper's.
- A photo-documented report is made at departure and on arrival, from the same angles.
10. How the price is set
The fee depends on the distance, the length and type of the boat, the crew and the season. Fuel, marina costs and the skipper's return travel are separate items. Pick your route in the delivery cost calculator for an instant estimate.
11. Survey and delivery, marina by marina
