Fairline was founded in England in the 1960s and is one of the long-standing names in British motor yachting.
1. Getting to Know Fairline
With ranges such as Squadron (flybridge), Targa (sport) and Phantom, it is known for boats with strong seakeeping character and a solid feel.
In the Mediterranean these are boats private owners keep for many years, and they are common on the used market.
2. Flybridge and sport: two kinds of use
On flybridge models such as the Squadron, the flybridge attachments, ladder and hardtop come first; on sport models such as the Targa, the opening roof, glazing joints and signs of high-speed use.
On older examples, the refits the boat has had (engines, generator, electronics) and their records are the key to its condition today.
3. Points We Pay Attention To
These are not claims of defects. They are the places we spend extra time on boats of this make; every boat is judged on its own use and maintenance history.
Squadron and Phantom (flybridge)
- Flybridge and hardtop attachments, ladder.
- Shaft line, seals and cutless bearings.
- Generator and air-conditioning hours.
- Teak deck and glazing gaskets.
Targa (sport)
- Opening roof mechanism and seals.
- Engine mounts and exhaust line.
- Drive system, by model.
4. Owning One in Turkey
Fitted with widely used engine makes, so machinery service is easy to find in Turkey; ask about lead times for boat-specific parts.
Ask for the service records, invoices and any earlier survey report before the survey; work without records is noted as "could not be verified".
5. A Fairline sea trial
- Cranking time and exhaust smoke colour from cold, and again when warm.
- Full-load rpm and temperatures for each engine; thermal scan of the risers.
- On a Squadron: controls tested separately from the flybridge and the lower helm.
- On a Targa: wind noise from the opening roof underway and watertightness when closed.
On older British boats the wiring may have passed through several hands; unlabelled and added circuits are checked with a thermal camera and clamp meter.
6. Buying a boat that came from the UK
Some Fairlines sold in Turkey came from the UK. Documents then matter even more:
- Previous flag and registration; deletion certificate.
- VAT status: paid in the EU, and the evidence.
- CE marking or RCD declaration of conformity, depending on build year.
- UK service invoices and any earlier UK survey report.
