Small and mid-size fishing boats used for cruising and leisure fishing are among the most traded boats on the Turkish coast. Because prices are relatively low they are often bought without a survey, yet an engine or hull problem can cost close to the value of the boat.
1. GRP and wooden fishing boats
GRP fishing boats are built in series or in small workshops, and build quality varies widely. Hull thickness, internal grid and deck joints differ from workshop to workshop.
Wooden fishing boats are mostly craftsman-built; a well-kept wooden boat lasts long, but rot, caulking and fastening problems need to be found by sounding and moisture readings. More: wooden boat survey.
2. What we check
- Hull: moisture, delamination and impact marks on GRP; rot, seams and fastenings on wood.
- Inboard diesel: cold start, smoke colour, oil leaks, cooling and exhaust; temperatures under load.
- Shaft and stern gland: water ingress, alignment, play in the cutless bearing.
- Steering: rudder blade, bearings and linkage.
- Fuel system: tank, hoses and filter; sediment in older tanks.
- Electrics: battery, wiring and fuses; equipment added later.
- Safety: bilge pump, extinguisher, lifejackets.
3. Registration and papers
When buying a fishing boat, establish first whether it is registered for private (leisure) or commercial use; use and transfer depend on it. Ask the seller for:
- Registration record and licence.
- Engine serial number, checked against the registration.
- Engine service and repair invoices, if any.
- Whether there is any lien or attachment on the boat.
For the official side ask the harbour master; the survey reports technical condition. More: buying a boat in Turkey.
4. A survey sized to a small boat
Not every fishing boat needs a full survey. For boats of 6-9 metres a partial survey focused on hull, engine and basic systems is often enough, with a cost in proportion to the boat's value. We agree the scope in the quote.
