When the season ends many boats move from their summer marina to a yard with space ashore and maintenance facilities. We deliver them by sea, with a skipper and a photo-documented handover.
1. Why boats move for the winter
Winter berthing and storage-ashore rates differ markedly from marina to marina, and haul-out, antifouling and maintenance are done where the boat spends the winter. That is why many owners move the boat after the season to a yard with space ashore.
Some Aegean and Mediterranean marinas with large hard-standing areas: Marmaris Yacht Marina (about 1,000 boats ashore), Göcek Village Port (200 ashore), D-Marin Turgutreis (150 ashore). We recommend agreeing space and price with the marina early.
2. Autumn weather and timing
October and early November are best. From November lodos (south-westerly) winds and frontal systems become more frequent, windows shorten and waiting days can increase. The skipper decides on departure from the day's forecast; the boat is not taken into bad weather to keep to a calendar. November-March deliveries therefore carry a 20% surcharge.
3. Preparation before the delivery
- Space and haul-out date confirmed at the winter yard.
- Fuel level, papers and insurance cover for the delivery checked.
- Readiness-for-sea check at departure; anything unsuitable is reported in writing.
- A photo-documented handover on arrival, and the boat handed to the marina.
4. Lay-up and survey together
The boat sits dry ashore in winter, which makes it the right time for hull moisture and osmosis readings. If you plan to sell or to do major work next season, a survey can be planned with the delivery. See osmosis survey and combining lay-up and refit.
5. Price
The price depends on distance, boat type and length; skipper and crew fees and the crew's return travel are separate items, and fuel and marina costs are the owner's. The delivery quote tool gives an instant estimate of price and duration.
6. Notes from the field
- We recommend leaving the fuel tank full for the winter; an empty tank collects condensation.
- On a boat that has sat for a long time, the first lumpy sea stirs up sediment and blocks the fuel filter. We check filters before departure and carry spares.
- We take handover photos from the same angles at departure and arrival so differences are easy to compare.
