Catana is built at Canet-en-Roussillon on France's Mediterranean coast and is known for performance offshore catamarans.
1. Getting to Know Catana
With daggerboards and a light build, it is a name long-distance catamaran sailors know.
That the group now also builds Bali shows how widely Catana's design experience reaches.
2. Daggerboards and a light build
The daggerboards that set Catana apart are the source of its performance, and their care is a topic of its own. On survey we check the trunks, the boards themselves, the bearings and the lifting arrangement.
On light boats, load marks in the laminate and attachments are read closely after long passages.
3. Points We Pay Attention To
These are not claims of defects. They are the places we spend extra time on boats of this make; every boat is judged on its own use and maintenance history.
Catana models
- Daggerboard trunks, boards and lifting system.
- Steering system, bearings and any rudder protection.
- Underside of the bridgedeck and bulkhead attachments.
- Saildrive seals in both hulls.
- Rig and terminals.
4. Owning One in Turkey
Many have made long passages; logbooks and records of repairs are worth asking for.
Ask for the service records, invoices and any earlier survey report before the survey; work without records is noted as "could not be verified".
5. A Catana sea trial
On a daggerboard catamaran the sea trial is not complete until the boards have been raised and lowered. In suitable weather we:
- Take both boards fully down and fully up, checking for friction, noise and sticking in the case.
- Assess helm feel and tracking with boards down and up.
- Manoeuvre on two engines and on one; check saildrive vibration and noise.
- Listen for creaking at bridgedeck and bulkhead joints under sail load.
6. Documenting a long-passage history
Most Catanas have crossed an ocean or cruised far. That history is not a problem; an undocumented one is.
- Logbooks and the dates of major passages.
- Invoices and photographs of any board, rudder or case repair.
- Rig replacement date and rig inspection report.
- Saildrive bellows change dates.
