Istanbul → Göcek454 NM5 days11 days

Durations assume 8 hours under way per day, 18 knots for motor yachts and 7 knots for sailing yachts and catamarans. Weather waits and port formalities can add time.

2. On the route

After the Istanbul-Bodrum line the route rounds Knidos and the Datça peninsula and continues via Bozburun and Marmaris to Göcek. On a long passage the watch system, refuelling and weather windows are planned from the start.

3. Weather, current and season

Leaving the Dardanelles and running down the Aegean, the north wind is usually favourable; rounding the Datça peninsula is the leg that needs most care. Spring and autumn suit start- and end-of-season deliveries best.

Babakale, Karaburun and Knidos are the points where wind and sea build. More: cape passage board.

4. Fuel and stops

On a 454-mile route fuel is planned leg by leg. For motor yachts the usual refuelling line is Çanakkale, Ayvalık, Çeşme or Kuşadası, Bodrum and Marmaris. Sailing yachts keep a wider reserve because time under engine depends on the wind.‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌

If the boat sails at night a two-person watch system is set up; a rested crew matters more than speed. More: watch systems and crew.
