Jeanneau's Sun Odyssey and Merry Fisher ranges are both well represented in Turkish waters, the former heavily in charter fleets. Charter history is not a fault in itself, a regularly serviced charter boat often beats a neglected private one, but it does change what a survey weighs.
1. Construction Philosophy
Two very different use patterns sit under one name. A Sun Odyssey from a charter fleet has accumulated hours and hard use with (usually) regular servicing; a privately owned Merry Fisher may have low hours and long idle periods. Each produces its own list.
2. Points Examined
| Area | What is done |
|---|---|
| Rudder bearings and steering | On ex-charter boats, the first place play shows. Measured rather than estimated. |
| Winches, travellers and running rigging | Wear consistent with hours; pawls, springs and sheave condition. |
| Interior wear against stated hours | Upholstery, sole and locker wear should be consistent with the hour meter and the service file. |
| Window and hatch bedding | Interior damp traces are followed to their source rather than noted and left. |
| Engine installation | Alignment, mounts and exhaust on boats that have run long hours; cold start behaviour and load response on sea trial. |
| Fuel consumption claims | Advertised consumption is checked against what the engine actually does under staged load. |
Points We Pay Attention To on This Make
These are not claims of defects. They are the places we spend extra time on boats of this build; every boat is judged on its own use and maintenance history.
Sun Odyssey
- Internal grid bonds and keel bolts.
- Sealing at deck hardware and window frames.
- Seams and screw holes on older teak decks.
- Door and locker alignment, as an indirect sign of structural movement.
- On saildrive models, the seal condition and replacement date.
Merry Fisher and NC
- Engine mountings and the fuel line.
- On boats that sat unused, fuel quality, battery condition and anodes.
3. Two Ranges, Two Different Lists
Sun Odyssey and Merry Fisher sit under one name but rarely under one use pattern, and the survey weight shifts accordingly.
A Sun Odyssey out of charter has accumulated hours, usually with servicing behind them: steering, deck gear, sails and running rigging carry the wear, and the questions are about consistency between hours, records and what the boat actually shows. A privately owned Merry Fisher more often shows the opposite profile, low hours and long idle periods, which brings fuel degradation, battery condition, unused systems and anode consumption forward instead.
Neither pattern is better. They simply require the surveyor to look in different places, and an owner to ask different questions of the seller.
4. What Tends to Move a Price
Negotiation usually settles around rudder bearing play, sail and running rigging age, deck hardware wear and any interior damp trace that has not been traced to its source.
A finding becomes a negotiating position only when it is specific: the item number, the measurement, the photograph and a realistic cost. "Some moisture" moves nothing; "40 × 25 cm elevated reading with hollow sounding, starboard aft, class B" moves a price.
