Taking a yacht out of Turkey

The plan starts with paperwork.‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌

Taking a boat out of Turkey is more than changing ports: exit formalities, the destination's entry rules, the insurance navigation limits and documents that depend on the flag. The plan starts with paperwork, before the route.

Two different cases

Cruise or delivery
The boat goes abroad to return, or to be used there. Exit formalities are completed; a Turkish-flagged boat stays on the Turkish register.
Sale or permanent departure
If the boat has been sold abroad or is leaving for good, customs and registry steps are a separate process, handled with a customs broker and the harbour master.

Exit formalities

  1. Port of entry. Exit is from a port with customs and passport control.
  2. Crew list. Identity and passport details of everyone aboard.
  3. Foreign-flagged boat. The transit log is closed for exit.
  4. Customs, passport and harbour master. At most marinas handled through an agent.

The destination

On arrival the first stop is that country's official port of entry. Entry documents, cruising taxes and crew visa rules vary by country; current rules are confirmed with an agent when planning the route.

Differences by flag

Taking a Turkish-flagged boat abroad and taking out a foreign-flagged boat that is in Turkey on a transit log involve different formalities. For a Turkish-flagged boat, the boat's papers and exit clearance come first; for a foreign-flagged boat, closing the transit log. If the boat has been sold abroad, sale documents and, where needed, customs procedures also enter the process.

Planning

Exit date, the port of entry's opening hours, the agent and the destination's entry conditions are planned together. Once exit clearance is complete, the boat is expected to leave without delay, so the weather window and formalities are considered on one calendar.

The destination country

The destination's entry conditions, VAT status, crew visa and stay rules and any cruising tax are settled before departure. Entering an EU country, the boat's VAT status matters especially.

Insurance

The policy's navigation limits must cover the destination and route; if not, extra cover is arranged before departure.

Records

Copies of exit and entry documents are kept in the boat's file; they may be asked for if the boat's history is queried later.‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌

Agent

Handling formalities through an agent saves time, especially for owners leaving Turkey for the first time, and reduces the risk of a missing document.

A short checklist

Boat papers, insurance, crew list, passports, transit log if applicable, and the agent's contact: kept together in one folder aboard.

A digital copy of the folder stays with the owner as well, in case anything is lost or needed urgently from ashore.

How long the boat will stay in the destination country is considered from the start; in some countries long stays bring extra formalities or tax, which also affects the next season's plan.

If a return is planned, the papers needed on re-entry to Turkey are prepared in advance; for foreign-flagged boats, a new transit log is issued on return.‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌

Plan both directions together.
